TIPS FOR TAKING REFERENCE PHOTOS

Groom well and remove fly masks and distractions

Shoot in soft natural light (early morning, late afternoon, or overcast)

Choose a simple, uncluttered background

Photograph at the horse’s eye level, slightly from the side

Watch for expression: ears forward, soft eyes, relaxed posture

Leave space around the horse—don’t crop too tight

Capture a mix of angles: profile, three-quarter, head and neck

Take lots of photos—natural moments often beat posed ones
HOW IT WORKS: COMMISSIONING AN EQUINE PORTRAIT
We discuss your vision for the painting by phone, Zoom, or in-person. Not only will we discuss the painting size, timelines, and pricing, but I also love to learn about the subjects I paint. It helps me to infuse their energy and capture their character in the painting.
Email 1-5 of your favorite photos, and we’ll finalize the composition, pose, and any background or details. If your photo was professionally taken, please provide the photographer's contact info so I can obtain licensing / permission.
Once all details are finalized, I’ll prepare a digital agreement outlining the scope, pricing, and timeline for us both to sign.
